Instructor Background
Sifu John Agar was born in December 1955 in the North east of England he first became keen on learning Martial Arts at a early age after watching James Bond movies in the 1960s, John would visit his local library and take out as many books as he could about the arts of Judo and Ju jit su and then head home to practice on his younger brother Alan - nothings changed here, Alan and John still regularly train together after all these years!
It was not until March 1973 that John got his first taste real martial arts training when he joined Wado Ryu Karate class. He took to it straight away and loved it from the start (at this point John had no idea that several years later martial arts would become his full time occupation). He trained there times per week and also joined a local Aikido school where he attended once class per week. John continued his dedicated training for a further of two years attending full time summer schools before training unfortunately had to come to a end as the school closed down when the instructor moved to Japan to further his own studies.
Wing Chun Kung Fu
In January 1975 John read an article in his local news paper about a new martial arts school opening only a few miles away from his home , the style was Wing Chun kung Fu, an art from southern china and the Sifu (Instructor) was the first westerner to ever gain Master status in Hong Kong. John immediately enrolled and soon found a greater passion for the art that would drive him to apply the very same hard work and dedication that he once given his Karate training - Johns main instructor would travel around the country and abroad on a regular basis leaving the classes in the capable hands of his assistant instructor, a Chinese gentleman by the name of Alick Au.
Sifu Alick Au was soon to see the potential in his new student and drove John to bring out the best in his abilities, this encouragement paid dividends as after a couple of years of hard training John became Sifu Alick Aus assistant instructor, taking great pride in the ability to assist in the teaching of the schools many students. Sifu Au now resides in his native China.
British wing chun kung fu Association
July 1980 and Sifu John Agar and his brother Alan attend the British Wing Chun Kung Fu Association Head Quarters in Preston, Lancashire to be assessed by the Associations Master Mr John Darwin.
Master Darwin was very impressed by the Wing Chun skills displayed by the Agar brothers and gave his approval for both to be appointed as the associations chief instructors for the North East of England.
Sifu Agar was once again re-united with his first instructor later that year and assisted him with a number of intensive courses centered around Wing Chun but which also included the Filipino martial art Escrima and long pole training. When these intensive courses came to a end (October 1980) his Instructor moved from England to the U.S.A.
